Construction Career Package

Approximate Course Duration: 11 weeks

Inshore and Offshore Diving

If you know you want to focus your career on the subsea construction industry this package will provide you with the skills required in this area.
HSE commercial diver training will enable you to dive inshore and offshore in all standards of air diving equipment.

HSE First Aid at Work
The Construction Career Package includes our vital HSE First Aid at Work course, which is classroom based and provides appropriate safety training which is essential before taking your training underwater. This part of the course is classroom based and covers the important aspects of anatomy and physiology, first aid, diving illness, physics and the principles of decompression. HSE Surface Supplied
Following this you will move on to our HSE Surface Supplied Course, which takes 4 weeks to complete and includes 24 dives to a maximum depth of 50m (160ft). Not only will you gain diving experience in the unpredictable waters of Loch Linnhe, you will also experience a deep dive in one of our three surface decompression chambers. You will learn to dive in different models of diving helmet and use different deployment methods.Part of the course will teach you surface decompression techniques. HSE Surface Supplied (Top Up)
The one week HSE Surface Supplied (Top Up) Course (also know as wet bell) is essential for working offshore. The Top Up Course includes 8 dives to depths of 21m (70ft) and provides important safety procedures and experience of hot water suits. To read more about the top up course, click here.

HSE SCUBA
Once you have successfully completed the first aid at work, surface supplied and surface supplied (top up) courses, you will then move onto the HSE SCUBA course - adding some 24 dives to your experience. This course takes three weeks to complete and provides you with experience using different types of masks with voice communications. You will also learn how to carry out safety procedures as well as search and recovery methods. Full details of the HSE SCUBA course can be found here.

Tools Assessment
IMCA standard underwater tools instruction will give you experience with a range of equipment currently used in the underwater construction industry. You will be taught different, important principles regarding lifting, tying knots, storing rope, as well as the use of power tools - air lifts, water jets, etc - and hand tools - hammer, chisel, hack saw, etc.

Welding & Burning
In the final two weeks of the course, you will be taught the use of underwater oxy-arc cutting equipment and a surface cutting torch. This part of the Construction Career Package brings your course to a perfect conclusion with an excellent introduction to surface and underwater welding. On completion of the 11 week Construction Career Package you will have experienced around 58 dives in total.

Assessments
Throughout the Construction Career Package you will be assessed on your practical abilities as well as completing both written and multiple choice exams. Assistance will be given to those not used to written examinations and you are permitted two attempts at each exam.

Commercial Diving Equipment
The Construction Career Package includes:

  • All course books;
  • Use of drysuit, woolly bear, neoprene undersuit for under the hot water suits; work gloves; diving knife; neoprene hood and hard hat;
  • Submission to the HSE of Competency Assessment.

At the end of your course, you will have the following to take away with you:

  • Overalls;
  • Professional divers logbook;
  • Underwater Centre commercial diving t-shirt.

Our Location
The Underwater Centre is uniquely based on the shores of Loch Linnhe, a sheltered seawater loch with tides and varying visibility. At the foot of our private pier, on the loch bed, there are a range of subsea structures for you to train with. You will dive from either the pier or from one of our purpose built barges and learn diving and inspection techniques with our seabed structures, such as our simulated oil platform leg, a number of wrecks, NDT structure, a section of pipeline or subsea welding station.
