ROV Pilot Technician
Approximate Course Duration: 3 weeks
This course develops and teaches students the broad range of skills required to be an ROV pilot.
Lectures cover the different types and classes of ROV and the systems currently used in commercial environments. Practical exercises provide students with all the skills and experience required to keep an ROV flying, and flying well.
A good pilot technician is someone who can not only fly an ROV well, but also identify and remedy faults quickly. We aim to give each student at least ten hours flying time with real ‘live’ ROV, as opposed to simulators. This can mean that problems such as snagging of tethers, system failures and entanglement may occur. Dealing with these common problems is a vital part of the learning process.
Flying exercises will include: search and recovery; sonar mapping; site survey; zero visibility flying and umbilical re-termination. All flying exercises are carried out in exactly the same way they would at sea, with students providing a commentary whilst flying and maintaining a complete video and written log.
Highly experienced electronic engineers may be able to join the course, which is week 5 of the Premium ROV course, if they have the relevant experience.
