The Ultimate Location
The Underwater Centre in Fort William is based on the shores of Loch Linnhe, a sheltered sea loch in the west Highlands of Scotland. The pierside, seawater location provides a unique training experience. The Centre also benefits from all its services being in one location, which is rare with ROV training schools. The classrooms where you will study, your accommodation and restaurant are all within a few minutes walk of our own private pier.
During your training, you'll learn basic flying skills, be involved in diver observation with air and closed bell divers, inspect our concrete-clad pipeline, NDT station/ mock-up rig structure, investigate numerous wrecks and vehicles and conduct wide area searches. Throughout all of these exercises, you'll be competing against tidal currents and be exposed to haloclines and up to 4.6m tides. You'll also have to deal with working in close proximity to divers, other ROVs and be aware of surface activity. All of these factors combine to give students the most lifelike training possible. The training is challenging but provides you with a superb grounding in the skills you will need when you start your new career for real.
We use Seaeye Falcons to train you, these are recognised as the industry standard inspection ROV; for most pilot technicians, this is likely to be the first vehicle they see and use in the field. These are the reasons why The Underwater Centre's ROV Course is considered to offer the best 'wet' training for ROV pilot technicians in the world.
After a hard day of studying and flying, you can take advantage of living onsite by spending the evening mixing with other students, ROV and divers, networking new contacts, hearing about job opportunities, getting advice from instructors, etc. In addition to this, for those staying in the lodge, we provide access to the local college, where you can have unlimited internet access and also participate in online courses to improve your CV and gain help and advice in applying for that all-important first job.
